§ 156.128. Curb and Gutters.
(A)
Curbing shall be required for the purposes of drainage, safety and delineation and protection of pavement edge.
(B)
Curb requirements shall vary in accordance with the requirements shown in subsection 156.093(C). Curbs are also required:
(1)
Along parking areas, lanes and landscaping islands, to prevent the edge of the pavement from unraveling under wheel loads;
(2)
To stabilize pavement edge and delineate parking areas;
(3)
Ten (10) feet on each side of drainage inlets;
(4)
At intersections, corners and tight radii; and
(5)
To channel storm water as part of a piped drainage system. The need for piped drainage should be carefully considered on a site-by-site basis.
(C)
Where curbing is not required, some sort of edge definition and stabilization shall be furnished for safety reasons and to prevent pavement unraveling.
(D)
The width of curb and gutter shall be a minimum of twenty-four (24) inches and shall be either Florida State DOT type or Miami curb and gutter, depending upon the flow to be handled. Simple vertical curbing will not be acceptable to the City. Approved surmountable median curb may be used around median dividers on the high side of pavement. All curb designed to handle water shall incorporate and approved gutter design. There shall be a stabilized subgrade beneath all curbs and one (1) foot beyond the back of curb.
(E)
No water valve boxes, meters, portions of manholes or other appurtenances of any kind relating to any underground utilities shall be located in any portion of a curb-and-gutter section.
(F)
The minimum allowable flow line grade of curbs and gutters shall be 0.24 percent, except in intersections where flatter grades shall be allowable. The tolerance for ponded water in curb construction is one-quarter inch maximum; if exceeded, the section of curb shall be removed and reconstructed to grade.
(G)
Plastering shall not be permitted on the face of the curb. Joints shall be sawed (unless an alternate method is used) at intervals of ten (10) feet, except where shorter intervals are required for closures, but, in no case, less than four (4) feet.
(H)
No raised portion of any type of curb shall be constructed closer than twelve (12) feet from the pavement edge of an intersecting rural section road without curbs.
(I)
After concrete has set sufficiently, but, in no case, later than three (3) days after construction, the curbs shall be backfilled.
(J)
All cross-street valley gutters shall be constructed of concrete.
